• WELCOME TO MACASSAR ON-LINE!

THIS SITE WAS CREATED TO ADVANCE THE INTEREST OF MACASSAR AND ITS RESIDENTS

Macassar, as with so many other towns throughout  our wonderful South Africa, we were pushed here  to a “sleep town” from where we would go an serve our bosses. Grand old Apartheid did a fine job in destroying our belief in ourselves. It even had our parents believing the “white man” was right and the black man was not te be trusted. They provided them with their jobs and us with a place to sleep, education and food on the table. Who were we to complain?. What did we know?

We had the sand in our faces the wonderful breeze from the sea mixed with the awful stunk of the sewerage plants right on our doorsteps.

Still in spite of it for many of us this would be the place where we would come to find ourselves.  The place where we grew up, went to school and made our home.

Unfortunately there are still those who believe they do not deserve better. Who lives with a minority hangover from pre-apartheid. Their lack of believe in themselves shows in their mannerism and make them a crutch to society. We would continue to dream.

Macassar
In 1963 Macassar was proglumated as a coloured area where the then apartheid goverment planned to relocate coloured people from predominantly white areas. The areas would be Stellenbosch, Somerset West and The Strand. The excuse of "alternative accomodation" was used.  In 1969-1970 the first row houses were built in the area known as Riverside (next to the Eersteriver). Mrs. Katherine Beukes foundly recalls moving into Soekmekaar Street on the 8th of july 1970. In total 528 units were built. This area today is referred to as "The Old Scheme".

In 1972-73 the first flats were built in Macassar. These flats would only serve as temporary housing and these people will then be granted excess to the first houses built. As it turned out some people are still staying in these flats since the first day they moved in. Ironically a lot complain about the flats as sub standard housing, but when given the opportunity to own there own house, they declined as these rental units are a lot cheaper. All areas at the flats are newly tarred and washing poles were put up.

In 1973 the first semi-detached and free standing houses were built and was occupied from 1974.
The area then grew at a rapid rate since 1980.
